Bouygues joins forces with Ecocem on cement

Bouygues Construction and Ecocem have entered a global innovation partnership aimed at advancing the use of Ecocem’s ACT cement technology across Bouygues projects.

Testing framework outlined

The agreement sets out three distinct phases for independent assessment. First, Bouygues will run a laboratory program at its COFRAC‑accredited Materials Engineering Lab. The lab will examine ACT’s performance under controlled conditions, checking strength, durability and workability.

Second, the companies will move to full‑scale field trials. Beginning early 2025, structural concrete walls will be cast at Bouygues’ Scale One® facility in Chilly‑Mazarin, France. Tests will span winter and summer weather, with instrumentation tracking preparation, pouring, maturity, and early formwork removal. The on‑site production crew and the Materials Engineering Lab will supervise the process.

Third, after the initial field trials, a complete mock‑up will be erected. The mock‑up will include slabs, walls, columns and beams built under typical site conditions. This stage will run alongside Ecocem’s certification of ACT technology, allowing a full evaluation of in‑situ performance.

Company statements

Edward Woods, head of R&D and Innovation at Bouygues Construction, said, “At Bouygues Construction, our focus is on ‘Building for Life’, and essential to that is the need to address the important imperatives of the environmental transition. We are committed to making construction sustainable and less resource‑intensive. Any low carbon solution deployed by Bouygues Construction must deliver the required concrete performance, using standard working practice, and must be globally scalable and cost efficient.” He added that the collaboration reflects a shared drive to “find scalable solutions that drive down emissions at speed.”

Conor O’Riain, Ecocem’s managing director for Europe, called the collaboration “a significant turning point in the decarbonization of the construction sector.” He noted that the effort will “demonstrate that scalable, cost‑effective solutions to drastically reduce the carbon footprint of concrete are ready for large‑scale deployment.”

The partnership’s emphasis on validation aligns with broader industry trends toward low‑carbon materials. While many firms have announced similar initiatives, the systematic testing plan—from lab to full‑scale mock‑up—offers a clearer pathway to adoption than some more vague commitments.

Potential impact on emissions

Ecocem’s ACT technology claims to lower CO₂ emissions by replacing a portion of traditional Portland cement with a calcium‑aluminate‑based binder.
